A lantern left burning
At the Silent Arch a lantern was still lit at dawn, though no one had passed in days. I trimmed the wick and left it as I found it.
The tower that counts the stars
Thornwatch has one window facing north. From it you can see every star the old charts name, and three they do not.
Songs of the salt-carriers
An old woman in Hollowmere sang the road from memory, every bend in its own verse. I kept up for eleven verses before I lost the tune.
The waystone at the ford
Someone had cut new marks under the old ones. I copied both into the book. Neither says which way is safer.
Leaving Greyvale in the rain
The road is best walked in bad weather. It is the only time it is truly empty, and the only time it seems to listen.
The road, as I have walked itجاده، آنطور که پیمودهامش
Six days from Ashford to Greyvale, if the ford is low and the weather kind. Most travellers stop at Hollowmere; the road beyond it is older, narrower, and much quieter.
